Between 20% and 25% of the population will suffer from chronic pain in their lifetime. If you’re one of the unfortunate people who have to deal with this debilitating disease on a daily basis, or if you have a loved one who does, the series Mal invisible, vivre avec une douleur chronique, broadcast by Savoir Média, is a must-see.
In four 30-minute episodes, the series presents the stories of 4 people whose lives have been turned upside down by chronic pain. They recount how chronic pain has entered their lives, forced them to grieve and poisoned their daily lives, “like a permanent grind that spoils the melody of life”, says one of the participants.
These personal accounts are interspersed with segments in which specialists, including Anne Marie Pinard and Yves De Koninck from Laval University’s Faculty of Medicine, explain what chronic pain is, the nature of the disorder that causes it, existing treatments and their limitations, the lack of training of healthcare professionals in chronic pain issues, and the shortcomings of our healthcare system in the management of chronic pain sufferers.
