We study somatosensory perception within the mouse sensorimotor system, aiming to uncover the molecular, cellular, and circuitry mechanisms of sensory encoding, processing, and perception.

A mechanistic understanding of sensory perception requires an integrated approach. We combine cutting-edge optical and behavioral approaches to record and manipulate neural activity in the whole mouse to study sensation in normal and pathological conditions.

Thermal perception
Thermal perception allows us to detect changes in environmental temperature and prompts adequate responses, which is crucial for survival and well-being. It is initiated in peripheral terminals of primary sensory neurons, where the quality and intensity of thermal stimuli are encoded into neuronal activity and conveyed to the central nervous system. In our lab, we utilize in vivo calcium imaging to record from an ensemble of primary sensory neurons at high spatial and temporal resolutions to uncover how different thermal stimuli are represented and encoded. Additionally, we integrate genetics, pharmacology, and optogenetics approaches to examine the role of the code formed by primary sensory neurons in thermal perception.

Chronic pain
Chronic pain is both physiologically and psychologically debilitating, impacting a huge population globally and incurring significant socioeconomic cost. The spinal cord serves as a critical gateway for transmitting peripheral pain signals to the brain. By combining neuronal tracing, immunohistochemistry, slice electrophysiology, and in vivo functional imaging, we examine the structural and functional changes in genetically-identified subpopulations of spinal cord neurons under chronic pain conditions. In addition, we use behavioral studies with optogenetics and chemogenetics to explore the role these neurons play in the development and maintenance of chronic pain.

Feng obtained his PhD at Institute of Neuroscience in Shanghai, under the supervision of Dr. Xu Zhang. He then pursued post-doctoral training in Dr. Yves De Koninck’s lab at the Mental Health Institute in Quebec City, Canada. His research has centered on elucidating the physiological sensitivity of sensory afferents and identifying the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in both normal and pathological pain. Currently, he is an Adjunct Professor at the Faculty of Dentistry at Laval University and a Scientist at the CERVO Brain Research Center. His lab employs advanced optical and behavioral techniques to investigate how a population of sensory neurons, including primary afferents and spinal cord neurons, encode different natural stimuli and how these coding mechanisms change in various pathological conditions, such as chronic pain.
